Surviving the test of time!

When you were younger, did you ever bury a time capsule in the hope that someone will find it in the future? Well most of us did, so when John Mckenzie from the Shetland Amenity Trust called to tell us how they had found a time capsule when restoring their town hall in Lerwick on the Shetland Isles and believed it to be protected in our Barrier Foil PP250, we were delighted!

John went on to describe how amazed and grateful they all were to find that the items packaged in PP250 and contained in the time capsule were in immaculate condition, yet they had been underground for 21 years – Due to the use of PP250 Barrier Foil, it has meant that the artefacts were not able to be affected by oxygen ingress and water vapour transmission throughout its undisturbed years underground.

The Shetland Amenity Trust has decided that they are going to bury the time capsule again in anticipation for the next generation to find it in the same condition they have, so we have gratefully supplied them with a fresh roll of our PP250 with confidence that it will protect their artefacts for the next 100 years!

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Shetland Amenity Trust for allowing us to be a part of such an important piece of their island’s history and wish them every success with the restoration of their town hall.

Customer Support on the Road..

Over the past week or so, I have had the opportunity to go out on the road with one of our sales development managers, Paul Walker, visiting customers.
After a caffeine pit stop and a few more miles on the road, we met with our first customer of the day. This customer, in particular, uses our
PP005 Material which is one of our more resistant materials that are approved for use within the military.

Their chosen format was a 100metre tube roll format which once packed and cut to size, you need to hermetically seal the barrier foil to get the best from it. We demonstrated our HZ30 constant heat sealer on the shop floor to show them how the sealing temperature can be altered to suit the laminate which they are using to create a quick and perfect hermetic seal as well as how the use of a foot operated pedal and table screw clamp can make it more time efficient and effortless for them to seal their tailor made barrier foil.

Needless to say, they were extremely impressed but the day didn’t stop there! We gathered our things, clambered into the car and headed off over the hills to the east where we met our next customer, an export packer who has recently opened a new unit. This particular export packer uses our barrier foil bags, which help them to package and seal large items with ease. It was great to see how our barrier foil was wrapped around such large items, then placed into a larger blue case lined crates and loaded onto a shipping container ready for their trip across the sea!

Speaking of shipping goods, I’ve also learned a lot about freight and shipping here at Protective Packaging Ltd. I have been processing orders for all types of products such as F.I.B.C Liners ready to be put to use in Eastern Europe, hot fill Drum Liners travelling to the East Coast of America and not to mention the thousands of Bespoke Barrier Laminated Bags and Pouches for applications ranging from Export Packaging down to the packaging of Dried Snacks.

Protective Packaging Ltd is very big on ensuring that internal knowledge of the business and our products are expanded throughout all their employees especially to us on Customer Support so that when you have a query, we can give you the best possible advice.

Should have gone to Specsavers!

At Protective Packaging, we are well stocked with years of experience, readily available to help our customers with their barrier foil requirements.

Quite often, customers approach us with issues about inspecting the internals of a foil bag once it has been hermetically sealed. This could be due to customs clearance, inspection of products during transit, or the ability to monitor humidity levels inside of the bag but the list really does go on as to why our customers may need the contents of their High Barrier Foil packaging inspected!

As most of our foil laminates used to make 2D/3D bags contain a layer of aluminium, there is no way to see into the bag, without breaking the hermetic seal. To avoid having to do this and causing moisture damage to the products that you are trying to protect during transit or storage, we have a clear, high barrier, flexible material available which can be implemented in different formats:

Viewing Window:

A viewing window can be fitted in your preferred location of the High Barrier Foil Bag and to make sure that we get the location correct, we will first send you a drawing of your bag indicating the position of the window for your approval! Inserting a viewing window into your bag means that you can see inside the bag without breaking the seal, meaning that the high levels of moisture protection that barrier foil offers are maintained.

Humidity Indicator:

If you need to check the levels of the humidity within your packaged product during shipment, we can fit your packaging with a viewing window complete with a humidity indicator card which shows you the level of humidity within your bag easily.

Viewing Panel:

If you need more than just a small viewing window, maybe for customs clearance, we are able to manufacture a bag that has a whole panel made from our clear material. This is a tried and tested solution for the passing of the product through customs inspections without having to open the bag and expose your product to moisture damage. Just let us know which panel of the 3D barrier foil bag will need to be viewable to customs, and with an approved drawing from yourself, we will be able to create a unique barrier foil bag to suit your needs.

Box Liners Protect your Assets!

Having recently moved home it, of course, meant that a “few” boxes joined us along the way to our new home!

I have a tendency to be very organised so prior to the big house move, I was packing our stuff up on a weekly basis and shipping the boxes off to my dutiful parents’ house. Unfortunately, my parents also didn’t have the space to store all our stuff in their house so the boxes were downgraded to garage accommodation!

Due to Britain’s unpredictable weather, particularly rainy Manchester, I wanted to get one step ahead and ensure that none of our belonging was going to be damaged by the unpredictable, wet climate!

To protect our belongings which ranged from food items all the way to electrical items, I ordered myself some Barrier Foil Box Liners which were custom made to fit the dimension of our corrugated boxes perfectly.

Barrier Foil Liners protect products that are susceptible to moisture and vapour damage during transportation or storage and by ordering through Protective Packaging Ltd, there was no minimum order quantity which made this the best packaging format and service for my needs at this time.

Buying a home, especially your first can be extremely stressful and emotional so the last thing I wanted was to be worrying about the condition of our belongings whilst in storage, however, Protective Packaging Ltd’s Barrier Foil Liners can also be advantageous to the dried product industry!

Some of our most popular applications are:

  • – Engineered Plastics
  • – Polymers and Resins
  • – Re-active Hot Melt Adhesives
  • – Pharmaceutical Intermediates
  • – Food Ingredients

Summer Company Lunch at Protective Packaging

Last week our Operational Support Manager Blogged about how Protective Packaging’s Company Lunches are arranged. Following on from that, Nicola from our Accounts Department wanted to give you an attendee’s view!

At Protective Packaging Ltd we like to keep everybody fully informed and up to date with what is happening within the company; so after the end of each quarter we all get together at our company lunch.

During the summer we like to arrange a garden party and have a BBQ. Sadly this month, the weather was not very kind to us, so rather than erecting Blue Case Lining for shade from the sun and covering the picnic tables with Aluminium Foil we had to use the canteen instead, however, PP0038 was still used to cover the serving tables.

During these company lunches, in addition to updates from the management team, we also celebrate awards handed to the nominated colleagues for the employee of the month award, the employee of the quarter award and finally, the super suggestion award. A Super Suggestion Award is awarded to an employee whose suggestion for a way to improve Protective Packaging Ltd’s service and commitment to their customers has been implemented!

We also celebrate special birthdays, announce engagements, weddings, and any new arrivals, be they new people joining the Protective Packaging Ltd family or colleagues on the arrival of their babies.

Our Customer Support team are ready and waiting for your call to discuss all your packaging needs, whether that is foil rolls, made to measure foil bags, drum liners or anything else from our vast list of aluminium foil packaging products.

Independence Day at Protective Packaging!

29 years ago, I joined Protective Packaging Ltd and over the years it has grown with me. As operational support manager, I am responsible for ensuring that everything runs smoothly every day but my responsibilities do not end there.

Protective Packaging provide their employees with a themed quarterly company lunch, a time for us all to get together, eat some good food, play some games and get rewarded for our efforts but who arranges these company lunches?

The Social Committee, there are 5 of us currently and I am one of them! This quarter’s company lunch was held on the 4th July so what more an appropriate theme than Independence Day? I and the committee members pulled together to arrange for the company lunch to be held outside, weather permitting!

A BBQ was sizzling away with Beef Burgers and Hot Dogs on the day, as well as a Popcorn Machine popping, Candy Floss being spun and of course, the famous Cosco Pizzas going down a treat…I told you we scoff some good food!

We then celebrated our hard work with a game of stand up Bingo, lucky dip balloons where there were prizes be won and finally, our Managing Director presents the Employee of the Month and Employee of the Quarter with their certificates!

Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the company lunch and the weather stayed dry! All of the proceeds raised from the day will be donated to our charity of the year, Wood Street Mission

Dean Byron-Davis on Supporting Customers

Having only started with PPL back in February this year I won’t lie, as someone who gets most of his shopping from an online, American retailer, my knowledge of the packaging industry mainly consisted of oversized cardboard boxes, bubble-wrap and endless amounts of brown packaging paper.

Luckily for me, I did my homework before my interview and managed to secure a role on the Customer Support team here at Protective Packaging.

My earlier blog in April was a quick Q&A with our Marketing Manager which gave a quick overview of my thoughts on the role during my very early days, but I felt that now I have successfully achieved my 3-month milestone, I wanted to give you an update on how far I have come.

Still quite new to the role, company and industry, I am still learning about the wonderful world of protective packaging particularly why it’s used and the importance of using it! It was clear very early on that Protective Packaging Ltd pride themselves on their customer support department.

As many of you know, all of our products are bespoke and made to order. In order for myself and team to give you tailored advice and recommendations in line with your requirements, it is extremely important that we have the technical knowledge behind us to help you. Which is why Protective Packaging provides us all with full training on our products and laminates right down to making a bag ourselves. Considering this, it is no surprise that we have customer relationships dating back to the full 30 years we have traded and we continue to receive a healthy amount of recommendations and new enquiries per month looking for advice.

Now that I have successfully completed my 3-month, extensive training plan, I am now confident with speaking to customers daily, processing their orders and providing quotes on our full range of products. The time has flown by and I’m enjoying being part of the team.

For any new enquiries please contact our wonderful Customer Support team on 0161 976 2006.

5 Essential Pharmaceutical Packaging Tips

The pharmaceutical industry today has many rules and regulations that you need to comply with, right down to what you package your pharmaceuticals in.
It is vital that the packaging selected adequately protects and preserves the integrity of the product and the selection process all boils down to the products physical and chemical characteristics, as well as its protective needs and marketing requirements.
The above can make the right packaging material complicated which is why we have compiled 5 essential pharmaceutical packaging points that you need to know.

Permeation

Permeation, the transmission of gases, vapour or liquids can have drastic effects on the shelf life of a drug. If your chosen packaging material allows a subsequent transmission of water vapour or oxygen, and your products dosage form is sensitive to hydrolysis or oxidation then it can present problems.
To ensure that your packaging is not a victim to permeation then you should ask for the Water Vapour Transmission rates when purchasing materials. Further to this, keep in mind that temperature and humidity can influence the permeability of oxygen and water through plastic packaging meaning that your product may not be protected from temperature extremes.

Leaching

This is the separation of chemicals from a solid which can cause drug contamination and the need to remove the product from the market resulting in a subsequent loss. Leaching is most common in plastic containers as they tend to have one or more ingredients added to stabilise or impart a specific property to the plastic.

Sorption

The removal of elements from the drug product, by the packaging material. Sorption can lead to serious consequences for drug preparation when important ingredients are in the solution. As drug substances tend to have high potency and are administered in small doses it can mean losses due to sorption can significantly affect the therapeutic efficiency of the preparation.
Loss through sorption can leave the product unprotected and vulnerable to microbial growth.

Chemical Reaction

Consideration of the reactivity of the drugs you are packaging need to be taken into account. Certain ingredients which are used in plastic formulations may react chemically with one or other components of a drug product, subsequently altering the appearance of the plastic or the drug.

Modification

A drug can sometimes change the physical and chemical formulations of the packaging material. This is known as a modification. This is often caused by permeation of gases and vapour from the environment or via loss of contents through the container wall, deformation in polyethylene containers is often due to this.

Key Takeaways:

The material selected must have the following characteristics:
– The material must protect the preparation from environmental conditions.
– Must not be reactive with the product.
– Must not impart odour or taste to the product.
– Must be non-toxic.
– Must be FDA approved.
– Must meet tamper-resistance requirements.

In summary, when purchasing packaging material for your drug products you need to take a look at the technical information of the specific material and ensure that it provides complete climatic protection to your product such as Aluminium Barrier Foil. Browse our Pharmaceutical product range.
