Getting married is classed as one of the top ten occasions considered as a milestone in a persons life. The wedding day is very important to every man and woman; this is your special day that is about you and your partner entering a new life together, in partnership.

For the women, the wedding dress is a massively important part of the wedding day. Poring through countless bridal magazines and trying on countless gowns, you finally find the ONE. Your husband was overcome with emotion, your Mother cried and your friends showered you with compliments on your big day. Your dress is stunning, but what do you do with it now?

Our Sales Director for France and Spain, Jean-Pascal and his wife decided to save the dress as a keepsake but wanted to preserve its original condition. This decision lead Jean-Pascal on to having a PPCC8 flat bag made to fit the wedding dress which will ensure that the original condition of the dress will be preserved for many years.

PPCC8 is a combination of two of Protective Packaging Ltd’s Barrier Foil Laminate Materials. One side of the bag is manufactured from PPCC1 whilst the other side is manufactured from PP008.

PPCC1, offers the advantage of being transparent which means that it is possible to have a look at the dress at any time without having to open the bag.

PPCC1 whilst being a transparent material also gives a much better humidity barrier protection (0.2gr/m2/24h) than a normal PE layer as the polyester is reverse coated with a layer of PVDC. As the material is made of a layer of Polyester & a layer of PE it is therefore possible to heat seal this material to any of our other barrier foil laminates.

PP008, has been chosen for its layer of aluminium which will give the dress excellent protection against humidity. This material is manufactured with cross laminated PE film providing it with strong tear resistance, but on this occasion, we are more interested in the black aspect of the PE which is achieved thanks to carbon black additive which is added to the PE. In that way, the white of the dress stands out on a black background.

Constant Development

Protective Packaging’s success for 30 years and dominance in our sector is due to a number of factors; in particular our focus on quality, our dedication to our customers and our ability to deliver a bespoke climatic packaging service to meet specialised requirements.

To do this requires the recruitment, training and retention of a highly skilled workforce. Ongoing success means ongoing innovation and development, and at Protective Packaging, we are committed to ensuring our team continues to develop and enhance their skills.

In the past few months we have organised a large amount of training for our employees, resulting in 41% of our workforce successfully completing recognised certificated qualifications for their efforts.

In addition to this, Protective Packaging sets quarterly training and learning objectives for all employees linked to a bonus on completion. This initiative, as well as continuing to enhance cross-skilling and knowledge sharing throughout the business, also enables different departments to gain insight and understanding into other areas of the company.

While training is encouraged, more importantly, we want employees to be proactive in applying their knowledge and skills to improve how we work for the benefit of our customers, our employees and our working environment, which ultimately contributes to the ongoing success of our business. This constant development generates ideas to continuously improve our processes, with numerous contenders each month for our Super Suggestion Award.

One example of this is, following First Aid at Work training; one of our newly qualified First Aiders noted that no Defibrillator could be located within a mile of our business, significantly reducing the chance of a person’s survival in the unfortunate event of a cardiac arrest. While we would hope this would never be needed, to resolve this concern, Protective Packaging contacted neighbours on Dane Road Industrial Estate to jointly purchase one that could then be jointly accessed in an emergency. We are currently in discussion with one of our neighbours to acquire this potentially life saving resource.

While many initiatives may not have a potentially life saving impact, they all add up to continuous improvements in our service to our customers, which combine to maintain our position at the forefront of our industry.

A year in the making

Since joining Protective Packaging at the beginning of February last year I find myself celebrating my first full year with the company at the same time we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of PPL, as you may be able to tell from our shiny new temporary logo!

In my short time with the company I have been amazed on a daily basis at all of the different types of industries that use our products.

From Export Packers, where we can provide urgent same day despatch on our foil bags which are completely bespoke and made to the required size. To various compound manufacturers which we supply with aluminium barrier foil packaging formats such as our large volume bespoke pouches/bags from our automated JOEY and BFM machines up to liners for Drums, Octabins and FIBCs, all of which are bespoke and made to customer size requirements.

New enquiries are received daily, all efficiently dealt with by our trained Sales and Customer Support teams, offering expert advice, competitive pricing and short lead times – making it no surprise that we have been a supplier of our products to many of our customers for the last 30 years.

If you require any of the products mentioned in my blog, or across the range detailed on the website, please feel free to drop us a website enquiry, or contact us on: 0161 976 2006

Determine the condition of goods at every stage…

ShockWatch® indicators offer valuable means of determining the condition of the goods at every stage of the distribution chain and provide a very visible deterrent to mishandling.

ShockWatch® is an impact detection device which fixes directly to the outside of shipping cartons. The label contains a tiny vial filled with a special liquid which turns from clear to bright red if the package is roughly handled.

Unfortunately, the ShockWatch® is known to activate during the shipment from ourselves to the customer or indeed from our customer to their ultimate end-user. This made the ShockWatch unproductive and purposeless to our customers or their customers, however, we are delighted to tell you that we stock the new and improved ShockWatch®2.

Why choose ShockWatch®2?

  • Unlike the ShockWatch®, the ShockWatch®2 will not activate during shipment from Protective Packaging Ltd to the customer or indeed from the customer to their ultimate end-user.
  • The ShockWatch®2 can only be activated at the point of use by simply peeling the protective backing label off of the reverse of the device.
  • The backing label must also be removed to attach the device to the package ensuring that the device is always and only activated when attached to its package.
  • It is now possible for us to ship the ShockWatch®2 via a standard parcel carrier rather than the previous need to ship on a specially protected pallet with a dedicated forwarder.
  • Each individual ShockWatch® 2 is also serialised and the corresponding serial number can be written on the shipping documents eliminating the need to put one inside the case as well as on the outside as tampering with or replacing the device is no longer possible.

The ShockWatch®2 is available in stock with a MOQ of 100 pieces. Please contact our Customer Support team on 0161 976 2006 if you require any further information.

Quality begins Internally…

My day-to-day duties are generally conducted in the realms of the accounts’ department but I have recently joined the Internal Audit Team. Being a part of the Internal Audit Team has meant that I have been exposed to different areas of Protective Packaging Ltd’ departments and their procedures, which I hadn’t previously been involved in.

Protective Packaging Ltd’ objective is to ensure that they have effective control of their own Quality System.

The Internal Audit Team is currently involved in reviewing the procedures currently in place for each department. This is to ensure continuous improvement and that we are working towards and will achieve the standard of ISO 9001:2015.

To gain an insight into the different departmental procedures, I attend training sessions within each department. Due to its long-standing service, my first training session began in the Hand Fabrication department. This department enables Protective Packaging to offer services such as bespoke designs, no minimum order quantities and no limitations on size.

We are hoping to achieve ISO 9001:2015 accreditation later this year.

If you have any questions about Protective Packaging Ltd’ products or services, then please do not hesitate to contact us on 0161 973 2006 or email info@protpack.com

Why use an Aluminium Barrier Foil Drum Liner?

Do you produce or manufacture atmospherically-sensitive products and use Drums or Pails during your processing? They are a popular solution for the packaging of adhesives and sealants, particularly reactive hot melts, specialty chemicals, colorants, pharmaceuticals, plastic resins and compounds.

Some of these applications can create cleanliness issues and contamination during processing meaning that your company has to either dispose of the Drums or Pails securely or for them to be sterilised before they are reused which both have associated costs. As well as this many drums or pails do not protect your products from Moisture or Oxygen Ingress. Because of this, we introduced the manufacture of Aluminium Barrier Foil Drum Liners.

Round-Bottom Drum and Pail Liners act like flexible steel cans and can be manufactured to suit all sizes of Pails and Drums to ensure complete climatic protection due to the Aluminium Barrier Foil material.

What are the benefits of Round-Bottom Drum & Pail Liners?

– Allows Drum reusability and Drum cleanliness
– Provides the possibility to downgrade your drums to fibre or corrugate
– Product waste is reduced as liner strips easily away from the products
– Suitable for hot-fill products up to 160°C
– Food Contact Approved and Static Dissipative Materials Available
– Maintains the product’s moisture content and eliminates the need to
Re-dry prior to further processing

Round Bottom Drum and Pail liners manufactured out of Aluminium Barrier Foil can offer your company cost-effective solutions to the packing and shipping of your moisture sensitive applications.

Halloween Company Lunch

As discussed in my earlier blog ‘Independence Day at Protective Packaging!’ we have a Social Committee responsible for organising the companies’ social events including our quarterly company lunch!

It’s important for us to have these quarterly company lunches because it gives us a chance for us all get together, reflect on the previous quarter and for employees to be rewarded for their efforts and achievements, as well as give us the excuse to play a game of Bingo and eat a large lunch from Gabbotts Farm!

We have just enjoyed our Halloween party which was yet another huge success! Even though we couldn’t encourage our employees to enjoy fancy dress due to Health and Safety regulations we didn’t let that put us off, cob webs were hung over the windows, pumpkins carved, scary decorations hung and a smoke machine added to the effect!

The party was filled with a game of Halloween Bingo and ring toss over the witch’s hat where all proceeds raised will be donated to our charity of the year, Wood Street Mission. Finally, the party was concluded with our nominated employees receiving their employee of the month reward, super suggestion Rewards and employee of the quarter reward!

This quarter I would also like to say a big thank you on behalf of the Social committee to our HR Manager, Debbie for bringing in lots of scary decorations, including the smoke machine!

We hope that you enjoyed Halloween as much as we did. Keep an eye out for our last company lunch of 2017!

Knowledge is Power

I’ve been with Protective Packaging Ltd for 14 years now and as they have grown, my knowledge of the business and the industry has grown with it!

My role began making barrier foil bags in the hand fabrication department where we make a range of different barrier foil bags which can be as large as an ISO Container! Today, I train other employees on how to make Barrier Foil Bags and the best techniques to use as well as learn about how other departments are run so that I can further expand my knowledge of the business.

Each quarter each employee receives their own personal key performance indicators which are sometimes accompanied by a training buddy. This is to make sure that gaps in employees knowledge base are addressed and everyone is given the opportunity to learn as much as they can about the business. If we meet our key performance indicators we are rewarded with a bonus at the end of each quarter for our efforts, which is a great benefit!

Even though I have been here for 14 years there is still plenty for me to learn because the business adapts and changes processes each day to keep improving. This is why I also still receive key performance indicators and my personal key performance indicator this quarter is to learn how the BFM unit works, particularly how the BFM1, BFM2 & Joey machines operate so that I am able to set them up to run bags in the future if needed but also gain an understanding of the BFM departments day to day processes.

It’s great that Protective Packaging Ltd encourage invaluable knowledge to be fed through all of their employees, to not only give them the best opportunities for career progression but to also ensure that our customers get the most accurate and informative advice on the best barrier foil packaging format for their products.

No More Mould!

After recently buying our first home, it’s safe to say I was less than impressed to find damp earlier this year in our newly fitted built-in wardrobes!

After starting here at Protective Packaging, I decided to invest in a Dampstick.

So far it has been hung in the Wardrobe for 5 weeks, I have been weighing it every couple of weeks and keeping track of how much water it has collected.

The starting weight of a Dampstick is 1.5kg. After the first 2 weeks, it was weighing in at 2kg! After a further 3 weeks, it now weighs over 2.5kg.

My pictures below show just how much water has been collected in just 5 weeks. And no sign of damp or mould whatsoever!
