A year in the making

Since joining Protective Packaging at the beginning of February last year I find myself celebrating my first full year with the company at the same time we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of PPL, as you may be able to tell from our shiny new temporary logo!

In my short time with the company I have been amazed on a daily basis at all of the different types of industries that use our products.

From Export Packers, where we can provide urgent same day despatch on our foil bags which are completely bespoke and made to the required size. To various compound manufacturers which we supply with aluminium barrier foil packaging formats such as our large volume bespoke pouches/bags from our automated JOEY and BFM machines up to liners for Drums, Octabins and FIBCs, all of which are bespoke and made to customer size requirements.

New enquiries are received daily, all efficiently dealt with by our trained Sales and Customer Support teams, offering expert advice, competitive pricing and short lead times – making it no surprise that we have been a supplier of our products to many of our customers for the last 30 years.

Determine the condition of goods at every stage…

ShockWatch® indicators offer valuable means of determining the condition of the goods at every stage of the distribution chain and provide a very visible deterrent to mishandling.

ShockWatch® is an impact detection device which fixes directly to the outside of shipping cartons. The label contains a tiny vial filled with a special liquid which turns from clear to bright red if the package is roughly handled.

Unfortunately, the ShockWatch® is known to activate during the shipment from ourselves to the customer or indeed from our customer to their ultimate end-user. This made the ShockWatch unproductive and purposeless to our customers or their customers, however, we are delighted to tell you that we stock the new and improved ShockWatch®2.

Why choose ShockWatch®2?

  • Unlike the ShockWatch®, the ShockWatch®2 will not activate during shipment from Protective Packaging Ltd to the customer or indeed from the customer to their ultimate end-user.
  • The ShockWatch®2 can only be activated at the point of use by simply peeling the protective backing label off of the reverse of the device.
  • The backing label must also be removed to attach the device to the package ensuring that the device is always and only activated when attached to its package.
  • It is now possible for us to ship the ShockWatch®2 via a standard parcel carrier rather than the previous need to ship on a specially protected pallet with a dedicated forwarder.
  • Each individual ShockWatch® 2 is also serialised and the corresponding serial number can be written on the shipping documents eliminating the need to put one inside the case as well as on the outside as tampering with or replacing the device is no longer possible.

Quality begins Internally…

My day-to-day duties are generally conducted in the realms of the accounts’ department but I have recently joined the Internal Audit Team. Being a part of the Internal Audit Team has meant that I have been exposed to different areas of Protective Packaging Ltd’ departments and their procedures, which I hadn’t previously been involved in.

Protective Packaging Ltd’ objective is to ensure that they have effective control of their own Quality System.

The Internal Audit Team is currently involved in reviewing the procedures currently in place for each department. This is to ensure continuous improvement and that we are working towards and will achieve the standard of ISO 9001:2015.

To gain an insight into the different departmental procedures, I attend training sessions within each department. Due to its long-standing service, my first training session began in the Hand Fabrication department. This department enables Protective Packaging to offer services such as bespoke designs, no minimum order quantities and no limitations on size.

We are hoping to achieve ISO 9001:2015 accreditation later this year.
